March 29 is Declaw Awareness Day
Don't do it!
A topic that I fiercely believe in; leave those paws alone.
Organizations that are working tirelessly to educate the public and veterinarians about the pain and danger that this procedure does to cats, and others who support making it illegal:
Declawing is a surgical procedure, sometimes inaccurately termed “onychectomy,” which means “removal of the nail.” In reality, more than just the nail is removed. The animal’s toes are amputated at the last joint, which is the only way to remove the nail (claw) that grows from deep within the toe bone. Most people do not realize that bone—not only the nail—is removed. The cat ends up walking on stumps, can have difficulty digging in cat litter, and the pain will cause behavioral issues.
Most countries never adopted this practice, and those who still allow the surgery are changing their minds.
Why won't a cat lover like Taylor Swift speak up?
More veterinary offices are removing the procedure from their services voluntarily, but this needs to happen sooner rather than later.
Henry Update:
He's not eating, and backs away from food bowls.
He's been hiding underneath a table in the spare bedroom, because he knows I cannot get to him there.
Saturday morning, I managed to corner him long enough to smear some food on his face.
Oh, you should have seen the look he gave me, but at least he had to lick it off!
However, at night, he jumps onto the bed and allows pets and belly rubs.
The Hubby and I are making plans, and I've already volunteered to be the one who gets bitten, as that's what happened when we cornered Henry last October for his dental.
Thanks for the caring words, and I'll keep y'all updated.

Declawing is mutilation. I fail to understand why it hasn't been made illegal as in so many other countries.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with catching Henry and getting him to the vet. I hope there isn't too much bloodshed.
Declawing should never have been invented by whatever crazy person that was. Poor Henry. And also you and your husband worrying about him and knowing that you're going to have to get into the veterinarian. It sounds like probably the sooner the better. I certainly have him on my mind and I hope it all goes well. Leather gloves are a good idea.
ReplyDeleteDeclawing cats is ILLEGAL in Israel, except in cases of medical necessity.
ReplyDeletePoor Henry. Hope all goes well with him.
Mom has never had a cat without claws. We think it's cruel and should be illegal. Purrs for Henry.
ReplyDeleteLots of healing energy hugs and prayers for Henry ~ Yes to making declawing illegal ~ Hugs, ^_^
ReplyDeleteNeedless to say any such barbarous act should be outlawed and the perps punished to the maximum.
ReplyDeleteHopefully your vet visit goes way better than you fear.
Purrs

ReplyDeleteV; you've probably heard about these, but have you tried warming his food; the old adage a cat won't eat what a cat can't smell....tuna packed in water, sardines in water, meat only baby food, B 12 injection.... ?? L
Beautiful blog
ReplyDeletePlease read my post
ReplyDeleteVirginia finally outlawed declawing a couple of years ago. I suspect, however, that some vets are still doing it. Really hope Henry begins eating, but if not, we are sending POTP to get him scooped up and off to the vet without anyone being bitten. ReplyDeleteEven a formerly feral cat can be tough to handle when he doesn't want to be. I dread anything going wrong with Sable...
ReplyDeleteYes, everyone say no to declawing! Thanks for the Henry update and good luck getting him rangled up!
ReplyDeleteDeclawing is horrific. Poor Henry, I hope he allows you to get him some help.
ReplyDeleteI am against declawing. Anyone that does that deserves to have the first joints of all their fingers removed. I hope Henry is better soon. Good luck catching him. XO
ReplyDeleteI wish every state would ban declawing.
ReplyDeleteSending purrayers for Henry to feel like eating !
ReplyDeleteOnce upon a time I figured it was better a cat be declawed than homeless. Now I know better. Please, Henry, start eating again and be okay. Hugs and best wishes, my dear.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a kid, everybody I knew declawed the cats “to keep them from scratching the furniture.” Now we know better, we should be doing better.
ReplyDeleteWe agree. Declawing is barbaric and should be outlawed! Thank you for the Henry update. We're sorry he's still not eating, and are purring you can catch him so the vet can give him a look.
ReplyDeleteWe can't imagine what kind of numpty would even contemplate this ... it's baffling to say the least, and should never have been a procedure, ever. As mew can tell, we are vehemently opposed to such barbaricness against cat-kind.
