Limerick

World Limerick Day is celebrated on May 12th, as it marks the birthday of Edward Lear, born on May 12, 1812.

Lear is widely considered the father of the modern limerick, thanks to his enormously popular Book of Nonsense, published in 1846.

Tried to write my own limerick but failed miserably, so here are a few I found online:

~~~
My dear little tabby named Tippy,
Found a box that was just itty bitty,
She knew she could fit
And determined to sit,
Her success was exceedingly iffy.
Am visiting my dear friend Erica in Courtenay, on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.
Ocean views, mountains, scenic vistas at every turn, and a special little lady:
Sweet Pea!
The Hubby is taking excellent care of Da Boyz and Henry.
  1. Cute Limericks. We had to compose some at school which was fun, and I remember one of the girls composed a very rude one and was given a detention. I don't think it helped that we all roared with laughter!
    My poor attempt:
    There once was a cat named Flynn,
    Who didn't know if he wanted to be out or in,
    His mum shut him out,
    He started to shout,
    And told her she was creating a sin.
    1. I recall learning to write haikus in school, but not limericks. You've done a good job!
  9. I agree about Sweet Pea and can only imagine how many nicknames she's earned. ;) Upon meeting the man who turned out to be my first love, he'd put a note with his name and number inside a book of limericks before lending me the tome. Clever, eh?
