The Game Is Afoot!

"Philip St. John Basil Rathbone (13 June 1892 – 21 July 1967) was an English actor.

Born in South Africa and raised in Derbyshire, he rose to prominence in the United Kingdom as a Shakespearean stage actor and went on to appear in more than 70 films, primarily costume dramas, swashbucklers, and, occasionally, horror films." - Wikipedia

As a kid, we watched old black-and-white films on TV, and early on, I was a huge Errol Flynn fan.

Basil Rathbone played the very convincing villain to the hero in Captain Blood and The Adventures of Robin Hood  (movie screen grab above), and soon after began his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes from 1939 to 1946.

I easily joined Team Basil!

May I suggest his autobiography, "In & Out of Character"; it's very entertaining.

Years ago, I found a deerstalker-type cat hat, and here it is on our model, Chili Bruce, after being artified with Lunapic's Neon filter:

For the Peter Frampton fans out there from yesterday's post:

Let's Hop!

  1. What spectacular noir-ish artwork! Dad says he had this album. He's always been a big fan of live albums and wore out this one, as well as his copies of Cheap Trick at Budokan, Foghat, Kiss Alive and many more he can't remember.

  9. Rathbone could play villains or heroes - usually terse and intellectual - equally well.

  10. He certainly was a great actor and to me defined how Sherlock Holmes should be played.

    The artwork is very cool.
