YAY!

It's Caturday!

First off, let's give a WOO WOO to the State of California, and I'm paraphrasing here:

"...tendonectomy, onychectomy, or any type of claw removal on a feline within the practice of veterinary medicine...is ILLEGAL..."

Here's the bill: Bill AB-867

US States
New York
Maryland
Virginia
Massachusetts
Rhode Island
California
Washington D.C.

US Cities
Colorado: Denver
Missouri: St. Louis
Pennsylvania: Pittsburgh and Allentown
Texas: Austin
Wisconsin: Madison

Countries with Declawing Bans
United Kingdom: Declawing is illegal in the UK
France: The practice is prohibited
Germany: Declawing is illegal
Switzerland: The procedure is banned
Australia: Declawing is banned in Australia
New Zealand: Declawing is prohibited
Japan: Declawing is banned
Israel: The procedure is illegal
Brazil: Declawing is banned
Canada: Declawing is outlawed in nearly all of its provinces

Banned: refers to being not allowed, whereas illegal refers to being against the law.

An illegal act is inherently banned by the law, but a banned action is not necessarily illegal.

~~~
C'mon people; this should be illegal EVERYWHERE, so don't let up on your politicians to get them to step up, since the veterinary profession cannot.
  1. I actually would love to be sitting in the room when a doctor takes a human being rips out their fingernails and their toenails. I think that would change anybody's mind about messing with a cat.
    1. Declawing is the actual removal to the first joint of the cat's 'finger'. They walk on stumps for the rest of their lives, plus the natural defense of the sharp claws is gone. Declawed cats often bite a lot, since it's the only thing they can do. It's barbaric.
  2. I agree, it should be illegal everywhere and don't know why it is not already so! I would join Melissa in that room, but preferably cuts the end joints right off rather than just ripping the nails out.
    I am wondering, is there a difference between being illegal and being banned?
  4. Hurrah for the animal-lovers in California. Heck, you don't need to be an animal-lover to be against cruelty. Spread the ban!
  6. Yes, I hope the others get on board but I don't hold out hope for our backward state.
  7. When we were growing up, it’s what everyone’s parents did to protect the furniture. Now we know better and wouldn’t have it done for any reason.
