My new Paws Unite t-shirt from City The Kitty! |
Every day, and in any way, I talk to people about the life-altering and painful procedure that declawing causes cats, and how veterinarian's should NOT be performing it. The argument that cats won't get adopted unless declawed is false; the statistics show that our shelters are full of declawed cats due to behavioral issues. Declawing does not put cats in homes, nor does it keep them there, and the cat is maimed for life.
So now, I will wear my shirt, and hope it will start conversations. Some folks get very upset; they don't want to believe that they've knowingly harmed their cat, or that their trusted pet doctor allowed them to do it...and for a tidy sum, I might add. There are several professional veterinary groups who fight any legislation to criminalize declawing, and they have a LOT of $$ to throw at politicians. But right will win out someday, and we all can be a part of the process, by discussing the ramifications of declawing with friends and family, patronizing vet's who will not declaw (not many in Michigan, let me tell you!), and supporting the cause in any manner that you can.
I applaud both of these groups! Twenty years ago, I declawed our Tucker when I didn't know any better. When I learned what the surgery was I was mortified and vowed to never do it again--and to educate people when I can. There are so many great products and scratching items for cats now. And clipping their nails is not a big deal!
ReplyDeleteNo one was aware 20 years ago, and I appreciate your willingness to speak up about it. Just because it's been done in the past, doesn't mean it has to always be that way.
DeleteYes geriatric was uttered in the presence of this Diva.....luckily my dictionary was at home otherwise there would be been USE made of my built in weapons.
ReplyDeleteIronic I had my nail post today too.
I really don't mind the clipping it is the holding that I don't like. Dad is the holder and he has to hold me like a baby so all the digits are ready. You know we cats only get on our backs when we want to be on our backs
Hugs madi(son) d cat
Madi, they don't know how close they came to getting a visit from the Grim Reaper! The Hubby cannot clip Chili Bruce and Manny's nails easily, but he's working on it since he can trim Angel with no problems. I'd like to trim Patty O'Malley's nails, 'cause he likes to dig them into my head while he's fixing my hairdo! Ouch!
DeleteIt is a terrible practice, barbaric.
ReplyDeleteThat's the truth!
DeleteWe hope for the day that declawing will be no more. Paws need claws!
ReplyDeleteYes they do!
DeleteBravo, bravo, bravo! Declawing is evil!
ReplyDeleteWell said...
DeleteDeclawing is barbaric, pure and simple. Love that shirt!
ReplyDeleteBarbaric...yes!
DeleteAnd the AAHA looks the other way! It's sickening. Anecdotal evidence suggests many of the accredited vets are high dollar practices (from declawing). I knew it was wrong the second I set Kitty down and her paws broke open. I was in 8th grade and it was the worst day of my life.
ReplyDeleteIt's a betrayal by the veterinarians. I am so sorry that Kitty had to go through that.
DeleteI love that shirt!
ReplyDeleteThanks, and I know that you feel the same way.
DeleteKudos to you!! Love the shirt!
ReplyDeleteI know that you feel the same!
DeleteWe were horrified to read 5000 cats are declawed every day! WTP? We applaud these groups and their tireless efforts. We love your new t-shirt, too!
ReplyDeleteAll of us can do our part, to take a stand against it...and my shirt is a kind of advertising.
DeleteMy human has been anti-declaw for decades, and hates that it's still such a fight to get it outlawed. It's cruel and inhumane and it galls her that so many people are being kept in the dark about what it really is.
ReplyDeleteSummer, I'm with your human!
DeleteDeclawing should be illegal everywhere.. Claws can’t be replaced once declawed but furniture can be. Easily and without any pain.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's not really about furniture; it's about lazy humans who don't understand their cats needs.
DeleteI didn't even know declawing existed until I started reading cat blogs. In Portugal I never heard of it.
ReplyDeleteThat's a place that I'd like to get to here in America, Rosa!
DeleteHi Vicki, Like Rene I declawed our cat 35 years ago. I knew nothing about it then but I sure wouldn't do it now!!! Great t-shirt for a great cause.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog and leaving your kind comment.
Take care.
Glad you like your new shirt. It is horrifyin' to learn the truth. Mommy was a tech and had declawed kitties herself as nopawdy includin' her VET discussed the actual purrcedure and mommy didn't fully unnerstand anatomy. But, she would never do it again. And tries to 'splain to everyone why they shouldn't as well. Big hugs
ReplyDeleteLuv ya'

Declawin' cats is such a HORRIBLE thing. Here in Nova Scotia, the veterinarian association recently voted to ban the declawing of cats. The government didn't do it, so it's not illegal, BUT if a doctor were to continue declawin', he or she would lose their license to practice here in the province, I do believe. purrs
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome shirt! I wish declawing would be banned everywhere!!!
ReplyDeletePaws up ! That's a terrific shirt, wear it proudly ! We are strongly against declawing. It's forbidden and illegal in Switzerland, and we wish it were like this everywhere. Purrs
