World Spay Day 2019

From Wikipedia: "The event first started as Spay Day USA, an annual event created by the Doris Day Animal League (DDAL) in 1995, to promote spays and neuters across the country to help eliminate the problem of homeless pets. After the DDAL's merger with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) in 2006, the tradition continued under the auspices of the HSUS as World Spay Day."

Around the time that we adopted Angel and Chuck, a co-worker of nube had five cats; one male, four females.  He thought he'd be thrifty, and only had his male cat neutered.  Then, one day, he found out that his cats had gotten out, via a pushed-open window screen.  ALL FOUR FEMALES GOT PREGNANT from that afternoon romp, so he may have saved money on neutering and spaying costs, but he was up to his armpits in kittens a few months later!

SPAY AND NEUTER!
I know that I'm singing to the choir, but each of us can be an responsible cat ambassador.  There are more options available now than ever before, and even if you choose NOT to use a low-cost spay/neuter clinic, you can work a payment plan with your veterinarian.

-and-

IF YOU FEED THEM, FIX THEM!
That's the TNR mantra.
If I can trap cats, then anyone can, since I am a nervous nelly who is afraid to hurt anybody or anything.  With a bit of research, time management, and a humane trap...which you can borrow...you can prevent feral cats from reproducing, and therefore saving their lives, and those of the not-to-be kittens.

  1. That sign sure tells the story! I think all total we've TNR'd a little of 700 sweet ones about town. Well, the Dad did, he's pretty much retired now as did his two trapping partners. It's sure important.

  5. YAY For SPAY DAY!

Years ago, we rescued a cat sweet alley cat that we named Daisy. She had seven 3 month old kittens that we also rescued. We kept sweet Daisy and her kittens went to a great local shelters. We didn't get spayed for a few months because she was still nursing her kittens. About a month after we rescued her, her kittens (then about 4 months old) headed off to the shelter. Guess what happened? A week later she gave birth to four more kittens! We didn't even know she was pregnant or that she could get pregnant again so soon after she gave birth and was still nursing. She must have gotten pregnant right before we rescued her. Fortunately, the same shelter took the second litter a few months later. All kittens were adopted and Daisy lived with us for 10 years until she passed away from cancer.

  6. I swear to high heaven. If I had the money Bill Gates has for example or the other beyond belief rich men, I would donate millions to Vet clinics to spay and neuter for free.

  7. Oh my, that must've been quite an afternoon romp! Wonder if it was the same boy? We can joke about it but this is such an important message to get across.

  8. Those kitties are lucky to have you watching over them. I've seen first hand how quickly things can get out of control. My brother's first job as a pastor ... they started out with one farm cat. I told them to get her fixed and they waffled. Over the ten or so years they lived there, there was a point where they had 20 cats. Even worse, none of those cats survived more than a year or two. That's like 60 cats! All dead! Makes me sick.

  9. Thanks for sharing a very special day. This helps out with all the homeless kitties. So hopefully one day all kitties will be in a home with a family and not have to worry living on the outside.

  10. This is such a great post. Wish more people would listen to it. I am in the middle of catching feral cats and getting them fixed. It is such an important issue.

  11. Our old bro William's cat mom was pregnant with her second litter by the time our mom caught her. This was thanks to an irresponsible pair who claimed alternately that the cat was theirs/wasn't theirs. A rescue group made sure William's mom and her second litter were all fixed before they were adopted out.

  14. If I can trap a feral colony, anyone can. Research your locale for veterinary hospitals or rescue groups that will help with costs. It's not just our own cats who need fixing!

  15. Thank you! We couldn't agree more. If you feed 'em, fix 'em!

  17. Yeah, it's very important topic in Poland as well. We have so many homeless and sick cats which are giving a birth over and over again :( I'm a volunteer in the cats sanctuary so I'm up to date about it all the time.
