World Spay Day is held on the last Tuesday of February every year.

Spaying and neutering your pets is so very important.

Our readers are already well-versed in this.

Chili Bruce and Manny were neutered by the rescue before being put up for adoption.

Henry, with his ear tip, was neutered by a kind soul practicing TNR in my 'hood.

Here's a story that drives home the importance of getting all of your home animals rendered unable to have litters:

A co-worker had four or five cats, but only had the lone male neutered.

One day, the females broke through a screened window, each got out, and all of them became pregnant.

So, by saving himself the cost of the spay surgeries, now he was hip deep in kittens.

There are low-cost spay/neuter clinics all over now; the expense is worth it.

Fix 'em, folks!

Let's draw attention to the importance of spaying and neutering pets during a time when many animals begin to reproduce in the spring.

We know this, so spread the word.

Chat up a neighbor, the person next to you at the bookstore or library, the cashier when you buy you lottery tickets.

Sure, having a celebrity say it is great, yet the lone soldier on the battlefield can have an impact too.

Celebrated on the last Tuesday in February, World Spay Day shines a light on the need to spay or neuter companion and stray cats and dogs.

We cannot adopt our way out of the animal overpopulation.

We know we are preaching to the choir here, however we can each do our part:

-Chat up neighbors and friends, convince them to get their pets neutered.

-Support your local low-cost spay/neuter clinics.

-Become a foster for your favorite animal shelter or rescue.

"Launched in 1995, World Spay Day is an annual campaign that aims to encourage people to save animal lives by spaying and neutering companion animals and feral cats. World Spay Day itself is celebrated annually on the fourth Tuesday in February."

Here, in Pet Blogland, we are all already on board.

Yet, we can still influence others, by talking with neighbors, chatting up the people standing in line with you to get coffee, or while shopping for pet food at the store.

This is how I discuss my anti-declaw stance, as well as spay and neuter topics, and taking your pet to the vet instead of asking questions on social media!

When will we have a political candidate who espouses free or low cost vet care to everyone?

If anyone shows up with that platform, no matter what party affiliation, they will get my full support!

From Wikipedia: "The event first started as Spay Day USA, an annual event created by the Doris Day Animal League (DDAL) in 1995, to promote spays and neuters across the country to help eliminate the problem of homeless pets. After the DDAL's merger with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) in 2006, the tradition continued under the auspices of the HSUS as World Spay Day."

Around the time that we adopted Angel and Chuck, a co-worker of nube had five cats; one male, four females.  He thought he'd be thrifty, and only had his male cat neutered.  Then, one day, he found out that his cats had gotten out, via a pushed-open window screen.  ALL FOUR FEMALES GOT PREGNANT from that afternoon romp, so he may have saved money on neutering and spaying costs, but he was up to his armpits in kittens a few months later!

SPAY AND NEUTER!

I know that I'm singing to the choir, but each of us can be an responsible cat ambassador.  There are more options available now than ever before, and even if you choose NOT to use a low-cost spay/neuter clinic, you can work a payment plan with your veterinarian.

IF YOU FEED THEM, FIX THEM!

That's the TNR mantra.

If I can trap cats, then anyone can, since I am a nervous nelly who is afraid to hurt anybody or anything.  With a bit of research, time management, and a humane trap...which you can borrow...you can prevent feral cats from reproducing, and therefore saving their lives, and those of the not-to-be kittens.
