Claude Monet's Cats

Claude Monet
14 November 1840 – 5 December 1926
A founder of French Impressionist Painting

Obviously, such a talent would have a cat or two as his muse.

Except, I can find only ONE painting of a cat that he completed!

However, there was this sweet kitty...

Claude Monet positioned this statue to appear as if it was curled up on a pillow on his dining room couch, so his family reported.

So, what to make of this apparent HUGE HOLE is his artistic endeavors?

Well...I dunno.

I admire his art, and will travel a good distance to visit an art museum that has his paintings on display.

It's just too bad he didn't paint more cats...

  1. This is very interesting. Maybe he feared an inability to capture the enormity of what makes a cat. Even the greats have their limitations, after all. ~grin~ Be well!

  5. You got me interested so I went searching for Monet's cats. There are a lot of parodies as I am sure you found, but this one appears to be painted by Monet. I also saw a Monet print on Wayfair of a cat but couldn't find an original painting of it.

  7. Odd isn't it? Monet and the lack of cats that is. Hey I started that puzzle! I got a piece to fit on my second try!!!!!I love the colors.

  8. Maybe he thought that even he could not have captured on canvas such perfection as a cat.

  9. I'd have to agree with Mr Bellen's comment. Having been blessed (a lifetime ago, my "salad days" as they say) to visit a small impressionist museum in Paris I saw much of his extraordinary work. Personally, his cat sculpture you've shown appeals to me far more than his painting of one, yet his body of work will live through the ages. Lovely post.

  10. I like Money and have had the pleasure of visiting some magnificent Art museums. I took a picture several Dal's ago that I entitled Reminiscent of Monet when I posted it in Flickr. I'd love to have your take on it. I'll see if you have an email address in your profile.
