World Bee Day

May 20 is World Bee Day!

The observance of World Bee Day worldwide aims to:

  • Draw the attention of the world’s public and political decision-makers to the importance of protecting bees.
  • Remind us that we depend on bees and other pollinators.
  • Protect bees and other pollinators, which would significantly contribute to solving problems related to the global food supply and eliminate hunger in developing countries.
  • Halt the further loss of biodiversity and degradation of ecosystems, and thereby contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Our native bee house is busy.
Bats are also great pollinators; look at those wings.

There are more than 450 kinds of bees in Michigan, 3,600 types of bees in the USA, and 20,000 bee species around the world.

Be nice to bees, birds, butterflies, and bats.

  1. We get a lot of bees here. After being in decline for several years I have noticed the large bumble bees are making a return too.

  3. They are so much more important that some realize, and not harmful
to us if we do not bother them ...

  4. Yay for bees!! They really are important for pollination :)
Our bat population is slowly recovering after being almost wiped out due to "white nose syndrome"(fungal infection) that prevented them from eating.
Our planet heeds these critters :)

  10. We think that bees should be treasured and this is one of the reasons why we have let our garden grow wild in May!

  11. We like bees. We wish we could have bee attracting plants on our balcony, but the problem is it gets too much sun and gets way way too hot and everything Mom has tried to put out there has just fried. We're lucky we can at least feed the hummers.

  13. When our weeping Cherry tree was in full bloom, you could hear all the bees buzzing in it, like a loud kitty choir of purrs!

We have lots of bats here, they gobble up lots of those pesky mosquitoes!

We have all kinds of butterflies that visit in our yard, too.
I am trying to get lots of native plants growing in various parts of our yard...but on our patio, I plant other ones that attract the hummers and butterflies...not to mention the bees.
