February 2 is Groundhog Day
Determining if there will be another six weeks of Winter based on whether a marmot sees its shadow or not on February 2 is complete codswallop, but it's a reason for folks to get outside after being cooped up for far too long, and to dance around and be silly.
Below is a video taken through a window, as our local groundhog grazed in our backyard garden.
Groundhogs, also called woodchucks and whistle-pigs (look it up, it's true!) are native to North America, and are surprisingly agile and fast.
They also like to dig, such as under your building's foundation, and they'll eat their way through your vegetable garden, or in our case, the Tall Sunflower plants.
I'll plant more, as I rather like the chubby rodents.
❤️
I've been wondering where my resident groundhog has spent the winter. Once the acorns were cleaned off the ground and the last of my apples dropped off my trees, he totally disappeared so I'm not sure he's still close by. But I bet he's sleeping.
ReplyDeleteMom and dad calls them critters whistling pigs, too. They used to see them all the time when we lived in Asheville, but haven't seen any lately.
ReplyDeleteNo groundhogs here, but no shadows either. It is dull and overcast.
ReplyDeleteI love them, too. They have so much personality!
ReplyDeletewavez two ewe phil...lookin good dood :) ♥♥
ReplyDeleteWe just have nutria, and they aren't natives but invasives so they have no clue about the weather.
ReplyDeleteIf one of the ground hogs that frequents our yard had been the official ground hog, he would not have seen his shadow … it’s been an ugly, grey day here. They also love the sunflowers, the morning glories and the pumpkins we put out in the fall. Thanks for sharing that cute video. Thanks for sharing your awesome video. Be well!
How cool that you have a groundhog in your yard! But I don’t think he saw his shadow today.
ReplyDeleteWe love seeing the groundhogs that live around here. Something about them just makes us happy. :)
ReplyDeleteWe never see any groundhogs in our yard, at least not yet. They are fun to watch, except the ones that say Winter isn't over yet.
ReplyDeleteI saw on the news that they are only correct 30 % of the time.
ReplyDeleteCodswallop is an amazing word.
ReplyDeleteI have never placed too much faith in their predictions :)
ReplyDeleteWhat did yours predict?
ReplyDeleteThe groundhogs have great publicists
