Happy Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest!

Click here for more info: Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest

Every year on July 4th, Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest is held on Coney Island, New York.  Contestants eat as many hot dogs and buns in as they can in 10 minutes.
The male and female winners are awarded The Mustard Belt.

For many, watching this display of abject hoggery is sick and unamusing.
Yet, The Hubby and I have witnessed this spectacle on TV year after year.
Last year, Joey Chestnut ate a record 74 dogs and buns, while Miki Sudo won after downing 37.
Often, The Hubby calls Chili Bruce, "Joey Chestnut", making a joke that CB vacuums up his meals like he's in the contest!

Why are hot dogs such a big deal in America?

P.S. Don't believe for a second that I am encouraging hot dog eating: I'm vegan, for gosh sakes!
America is the home of the free and the brave, which includes free to eat whatever the manufacturers sell us, and brave enough to do it with TV cameras!

Roasted

Antique roasting pan still roasts!
***WARNING!!!***
DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER
I'm serious!

The Hubby roasted a whole turkey yesterday, after several days of defrosting the behemoth in the refrigerator.  We'd obtained it in late November, and it was sitting in the freezer until now.

Da Boyz went berserk all day, as the smells of cooking turkey filled the house.  The Hubby pulled out an old roasting pan, which he believes is from the 1940's.

Since I began my employment with this company in 2011, we've received a frozen turkey for the US Thanksgiving Day every year.  The Hubby and I are vegans, so we cook up the turkey to make into cat food.  The Hubby will grind the turkey meat, mix in some broth, and make portions, but last night we fed the cats small chunks of meat.

And, needless to say, the cats LURV'd it!  Chili Bruce ate his so fast, that we humans had to guard against him stealing from Manny's bowl.  Angel made squeaky noises, then stood frozen for a few seconds, as if taking in the beauty of the bounty.  Sweetie almost pulled her bowl out of my hand; she knows a good thing when she smells it!

The Hubby didn't spice the turkey, not even salt and pepper, because the cats don't need that stuff.  He's aware too that fat needs to be limited.  He cooks the bones, gizzards, and skin down to make the broth.  We know that it's not purrfect cat food, but it's a kind of treat for them; they'll only get one meal every few days until it's gone.

Trip Recap: The Food

I am vegan, which means I don't eat any meat, fish, or dairy.  Often, while traveling, I cannot be  strict, otherwise I may not be able to eat at all! The Hubby supplied me with almonds, sunflower seeds, and a few sandwiches, but we were in the UK for over a week.  To my delight, almost every restaurant or pub that we went to had vegan food.  I ate hummus and pita chips, falafel sandwiches with beets, and a delightful jackfruit gyro before attending "Twelfth Night" by William Shakespeare at the Globe Theatre.

At The Albert!
"The Albert is a Grade II listed pub located at 52 Victoria Street in Victoria, London, about 0.4 miles (0.64 km) southwest of Westminster Abbey. Built in 1862 by the Artillery Brewery, the pub retains its striking façade and Victorian features that were undamaged during The Blitz in World War II. The Albert was named in tribute to Queen Victoria's husband, Albert, Prince Consort." as found online.
I'll admit to eating fish and chips at The Albert; I mean, we were in England!  DUH!

Tasty Vegan tartine repast in Covent Garden

Porridge and tea in Bath
The porridge was made with milk, and I didn't think to ask our server to put it on the side before placing my order, but it was very yummy, and surprisingly filling!  I couldn't even finish that huge bowl.

At Comins Tea, having a pot of Sencha Green tea
And I drank tea at every opportunity.  Breakfast Tea, Earl Grey, and any manner of green teas too.  YUMMMMMM.....

Angel Has Garlic Breath

In the hubby's arms
Being vegans, the hubby and I rarely eat out due to a lack of good places to eat.  Hey, this is Metro Detroit, not California!  Anyhow, we have a few favorite restaurants that serve great vegetable-based meals, and some have this stuff they call garlic sauce. It's raw, whipped garlic, and it's pure heaven to eat.  You must eat this with a close friend, because you cannot be around anyone else without bowling them over with your breath...seriously.

When we bring home a serving of garlic sauce, Angel gets all excited about it!  She will lick it right off my fingers, or from a piece of toast that's been buttered with the stuff. We do NOT allow her to have too much, but it's fun to watch her enjoy herself!
