Flying Flippantly

Recognized on the last day of the annual Christmas Bird Count, National Bird Day is widely celebrated to raise awareness of the treatment of birds in captivity and promote the conservation of wild birds.

I love birds; love to watch them as they flit about in the trees, but am crap at identification despite the four bird books within easy reach.

Am very aware that outside cats will try to snatch birds for a meal, yet we only witnessed one bird killed by our outside cats...and that was by Celestial Paddy O'Malley.

Sweetie was an excellent mouser, by the way.

In honor of birds, here are a few joking cartoons and meme re: birds and cats.

Have already warned Trout Talkin Tabbies about today's post, as they really don't like 'burds'.

Bass Terd Burds

Trout Talking Tabbies...do not read any further!
I purposely used Bass Terd Burds as today's title, to warn you away!

At my office, a pair of Canada Geese have chosen the front door are of one of our buildings to nest near.

We've added caution tape and signs telling everyone to go around!
In addition, I attended "Owl Fest" at Lake St. Clair Metropark last Saturday.  How cool to be within a few feet of these beautiful creatures.

Barred Owl

Eastern Screech Owl

Saw Whet Owl

Long Eared Owl

Peregrine Falcon
Needless to say, since we've had warmer temperatures in Michigan, all of the inside Eastside Cats are enjoying plenty of window time, watching the robins, wrens, and chickadees.  The 'O' Cats appear to be indifferent to birds, at least when I'm around.

Speaking of The 'O' Cats:

The PO'M is not modest!
Paddy O'Malley has a big bald spot on his belly!  I have no idea what this is about; is he over grooming?  He has a couple of other bald spots, which look like chunks of his fur were pulled out.  He always seems itchy.  We may have to try new foods, to see if there is any change.  In spite of his missing fur, The PO'M is as lovey dovey as ever.

Roasted

Antique roasting pan still roasts!
***WARNING!!!***
DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER
I'm serious!

The Hubby roasted a whole turkey yesterday, after several days of defrosting the behemoth in the refrigerator.  We'd obtained it in late November, and it was sitting in the freezer until now.

Da Boyz went berserk all day, as the smells of cooking turkey filled the house.  The Hubby pulled out an old roasting pan, which he believes is from the 1940's.

Since I began my employment with this company in 2011, we've received a frozen turkey for the US Thanksgiving Day every year.  The Hubby and I are vegans, so we cook up the turkey to make into cat food.  The Hubby will grind the turkey meat, mix in some broth, and make portions, but last night we fed the cats small chunks of meat.

And, needless to say, the cats LURV'd it!  Chili Bruce ate his so fast, that we humans had to guard against him stealing from Manny's bowl.  Angel made squeaky noises, then stood frozen for a few seconds, as if taking in the beauty of the bounty.  Sweetie almost pulled her bowl out of my hand; she knows a good thing when she smells it!

The Hubby didn't spice the turkey, not even salt and pepper, because the cats don't need that stuff.  He's aware too that fat needs to be limited.  He cooks the bones, gizzards, and skin down to make the broth.  We know that it's not purrfect cat food, but it's a kind of treat for them; they'll only get one meal every few days until it's gone.

***We tend to warn Tuna, Dai$y, and Mack when we post about BURDS!***
