Visitor

Am NOT thankful, to have a new cat wandering the yard in the bitter cold.
We pulled The Cat Hotel out from storage in the garage...
...added heaps of fresh straw, and set it on bricks.
Cat tracks!
And a pic through the window of our visitor!
Thankful that we have a comfortable shelter, straw, and water bucket; the remains of Sweetie and Celestial Paddy O'Malley's outside life.

Should this fine kitty choose to hang around, we will put out food.

And if said kitty becomes a regular at the food bowl, then our humane trap will reappear, for no cat wanders our yard without TNR some day.

Thankful Thursday: Snowdrops & Coleman

Don't know who planted them, but snowdrops have appeared in the yard every Spring since we moved in!  I am thankful for their promise of warmer days to come.
But snow is still a part of Spring!

The 'O' Cats are bearing up well, despite the wacky weather

Thank you, Coleman cooler!
You've served up your last lick of water, but we'll always remember the years of service that you gave!

If I Had A Hammer

Ice and frost on The 'O' Cats water bucket

If I Had a Hammer
Written by Pete Seeger and Lee Hays in 1949

🎵If I had a hammer
I'd hammer in the morning
I'd hammer in the evening
All over this land
I'd hammer out danger
I'd hammer out a warning
I'd hammer out love between
My brothers and my sisters
All over this land, uh

If I had a bell
I'd ring it in the morning
I'd ring it in the evening
All over this land
I'd ring out danger
I'd ring out a warning
I'd ring out love between
My brothers and my sisters
All over this land, oh

If I had a song
I'd sing it in the morning
I'd sing it in the evening
All over this land
I'd sing out danger
I'd song of out a warning
I'd sing out love between
My brothers and my sisters
All over this land, oh

Well, I've got a hammer
And I've got a bell
And I've got a song to sing
All over this land
It's the hammer of justice
It's the bell of freedom
It's a song about love between
My brothers and my sisters
All over this land

It's a hammer of justice
It's a bell of freedom
It's a song about love between my brothers and my sisters
All over this land🎵

Hammer used to break ice, with photobomb by Chili Bruce

OOPS!
The Hubby got a bit carried away with the hammer!
Thankfully, we have a back-up water bucket.
No kitties were harmed in the production of this post,
and only one human was made to feel a bit too rambunctious!

Super Blood Wolf Moon

#1:
The temperatures in our area are frigid.  The 'O' Cats water bucket was just about frozen solid!

The weather app on my phone first thing this morning!

Water bucket, almost frozen solid

Sweetie and The PO'M came out for breakfast!
#2:
Last night was a Super Blood Wolf Moon!  Super, because of the short distance between the two celestial bodies; Blood, because of the full Lunar eclipse, which turns the face of the moon reddish; and Wolf Moon, 'cause it's January, when the wolves (and every other living thing!) need to find food.

Taken from the interwebs
This is how the full moon looked from our front window
#3:
Got up at midnight to look at the lunar eclipse, and Chili Bruce decided that my body would make a nice beddy for him!  I was laying on the futon in the parlor, which is on the first floor.  Bedrooms are on the second floor, in Angel's Apartment.

Last night's super full moon light still wasn't enough
to snap a photo of CB on my chest!

Cold

Temperatures are about 20 degrees F below average, and we've had a couple of significant snow storms.  This morning, I put out kibble only for The PO'M and Sweetie, because wet food would freeze solid before they could finish their meal.

Sweetie: "How is your kibble this morning?"
Paddy: "Quite delicious, Moma brought us a fresh batch!"

This bowl was used by my family since I was a little girl.
Now, it's The 'O' Cats's warm weather water bowl.
I don't remember where I put their winter bowl, but I'll find it!
And don't worry, I put out fresh...and liquid...water after this photo was taken!

Yep, It's Still Cold!

"Feels Like: -4 degrees F"
Yikes!
The Big Brrr has still got it's arms wrapped around us.  Last night, I held the front door open for Patty and Sweetie, and they ignored it. Couldn't they feel the warm air blowing out at them?  All that they wanted to do, was to herd me out of that door, and into the backyard where I would deliver food. Guess those two really are ferals, because you would think they would high-tail it inside at every chance they got!

This our window that overlooks our driveway.
It's frosted pretty good in this weather!

I use the broom handle to break the ice,
and then lever it out

Ice was over an inch thick

Fresh, liquid water!

Frost on The Cat Cat,
makes interesting patterns
Mind you, it is Winter, and we live in Michigan.  We know it's going to snow and get cold.  My thoughts are for the folks in The South, who really don't go for this kind of weather!  Stay safe, everyone!

Experiment Results

Nope, a bottle of salt water left in the feral cats's water bucket did NOT keep it from freezing.  In fact, I think it froze even faster!

The Hubby wants to try multiple salt water-filled bottles, but I'm done with this experiment.  We are fortunate to have warmer temperatures for awhile, and the water bucket will stay unfrozen all on it's own.  I feel really badly for the folks who've gotten hammered by the big snowfall, and yet we are experiencing sunshine and little precipitation.  So, my anxiety about The 'O' Cats is on a low boil for now.

Patty O'Malley wants petting!

Blurry Sweetie, enjoying her food
Patty and Sweetie are so much more active when there is no cold wind blowing and there is no ice or snow under their paws.  I love to sit on the deck, petting Patty with one hand, and Sweetie with the other!  That is, until Patty realizes he does not have my full attention, and he chases Sweetie away. That's when I stand up and walk away, in an attempt to show Patty that there is enough of me to go around, but he hasn't figured it out yet. Fortunately, Sweetie does not hold this behavior against me; she always comes back to me the next time I'm outside.

Oops...splash!

Trying to keep water liquid for The 'O' Cats in wintertime is almost impossible.  I use a 6-pack cooler, which is deep, and fill it with a full gallon of water.  The idea is; deep means slow to freeze.

But, it's Michigan, and the bucket starts icing over fairly quickly some days. I've also tried sprinkling in a tiny amount of sugar, under the scientific principle that the sugar crystals seem to retard to formation of ice.  It works, but in the really deep cold, nothing works.

Until now!  Well, I've only tried this since this morning, but I read at Lope for Hope about a trick they use for horses.  Fill a big bucket with water, and then float a few water bottles filled with salt water.

The Hubby gamely filled a small water bottle for me, and I stopped at the water bucket before leaving for the office.  The water bottle went in...then WHOOPS!

Keys and salt-water filled bottle, in the bucket
Yep, my keys went into the water too.
Fished out

Patty O'Malley doesn't care!
Thank goodness my coat pocket was filled with paper towels (always handy to towel off a wet cat, a wet bowl, or wet feeding station)...or keys.

Notice my X-Files key chain fob; I've been a die-hard fan of that TV show since the very first episode in 2003, and am delighted they have brought it back for a special 6-episode mini-series, starting this Sunday, January 24! People have even asked me why we did not name our cats Mulder or Scully...but that's an easy explanation; he is a Chucky, and sweet Angel is perfectly named.

Chuck's Check-up

It wasn't so bad, was it Chuck?
Saturday, The Hubby scooped up Chuck and deposited him in the PTU (Personnel Transport Unit) and off we went for a 3-month check-up with the echo-cardiogram veterinarian.  She said his blood pressure was 'good' and his heart sounds were the same as last visit.  Loaded with script refills, we were back home in no time.  Chuck sang the song of his people the entire trip there, but was more subdued and quiet on the way home.  Angel only hissed at Chuck for 24 hours after, before realizing that he, in fact, was her brother, and not some replicant cat that smelled of the nice vet's perfume. Note: The Hubby and I have tried many different ways to prevent the 'after vet visit aggression' but nothing has worked.  Leave a comment if you've had luck with wiping the cats down with towels or socks before the visit, then doing some sort of scent exchange afterward, or any other thing that works for you...please!

Cold as ice
Although November has been relatively mild here in Michigan, some night temps are below freezing. In the warmer weather, I use a water bowl for Patty and Sweetie; in the cold, I fill a 6-pack cooler with a gallon of water (the belief is that deeper water takes longer to freeze).  Here is a photo of the water bowl, and the ice cube that formed a couple of days ago.  Both cats have grown thick winter fur.

Here it comes...

Frozen

Sweetie napping in the garden

Patty and Me; he's smiling...and so am I

It's getting to be that time of year, when my anxiety about Patty O'Malley and Sweetie starts to ratchet higher as the temperatures fall.  Their water bowl was frozen a couple of days ago.

In a perfect world, I would throw open the door, and invite them inside.  They could stay as long as they liked, and if they never want to go back out again, I would be happy to let them live with me forever.

However, the reality is that I already have two cats inside, and a stay-at-home hubby.  I am the one who comes and goes to the office, and spends less time in the house.  When we adopted Angel and Chuck over ten years ago,  they were inside-only and we humans foolishly considered our cat quota as met.  The first ferals (the late, great George and Hobo) were really skittish, and did not want human contact.  As the years rolled by, Sweetie, then Sammy, and lastly Patty came along.  They all used to run away from us, so we trapped 'em and fixed 'em, and figured a box with straw and some food would serve.

Yet Patty began to allow me to gently pet him, then hug him, and now we smooch and snuggle.  When Sweetie and Sammy saw what he was doing, they too joined in and I petted them and we became FRIENDS.  They run down the driveway when my car pulls up, and they meow and dance for me!  But the set up was for wild, unsocial cats!  My first priority must be Angel and Chuck, and yet these wonderful 'o' cats are only a hairs-breadth lower on the scale.  I think that I grieve for them, as each passing day gets colder, and I feel like I'm the bad guy.

Of course, they made it through last year's brutal winter; even Sammy who was probably rather sick the whole time lived through it.  So why do I worry so?  Hmm, if I could figure that out, then I wouldn't be writing about my pangs of terror when the winds blow, or how I wrap myself in multiple coats, boots, hats and scarves just to give them a fresh bucket of water.  I scrape ice, I sweep debris, and I shovel lots of snow to make paths so the cats can get through the drifts.  I add L-lysine and Vitamin C to their wet food, and in the really, really cold I heat up the bowls AND food, so they aren't living on kibble only.

And yet, it's not enough.  But do I pine and struggle for them, or for me?  They have everything they need; I do not.  I do not have them jump on my bed, or sing the song of their people at 3 a.m.  We don't LIVE together.  Such a conundrum, and it's beginning again.  Do they have crazy-lady-with-cats happy pills?  I think they do...

P.S. Today, the hubby and I finished insulating the Cat Hotel, and I filled both floors with straw.  The lower floor also has the warming pad.  Last thing to do is to put up a wind break on the second floor entrance.  Patty sat on the deck and watched us, while Sweetie lounged in the yard.  My fear is that they will abandon the Hotel any time we do something to it.  The overnight lows are staying above freezing for a few days longer, so if they need a day or two to courageously go back inside it, the temps aren't too bad.  Do you see how I am?

Phew...again

All three 'o' cats came running out to greet me this morning!  It felt as if they just wanted to show off; to prove that they were okay and rarin' to go.  Seeing them frisk about made my heart lift like a helium balloon.  Right now, the snow has ended and the sun is out, as the temps start to plummet.  Looks like we won't see 20's again until after mid-week next week.  Somehow, those three cats are doing okay!  Above is a shot of the pile of ice chunks that I break off of their water bucket twice or more each day.
