I Miss Sammy

Angel Sammy left for The Rainbow Bridge four years ago today, and I miss him still.  He wasn't well, and I tried hard to keep him with us, but he'd had enough and was ready to leave.  The veterinarian said that his mouth was 'a mess' when I finally trapped Sammy, and carried him in for a dental procedure.  She felt the kindest thing was to let him go, and as I looking into his eyes, he told me that it was his time.  The veterinarian cried along with me, as Sammy drifted off to Heaven.  However, I still have that twinge of guilt, because maybe we could have administered medicine, by mixing it with his food perhaps.  At that time, neither of us had any experience with pilling or medicating cats, since Chuck wasn't diagnosed with his heart and kidney problems yet.  And Sammy was feral, or the complete opposite of a house-cat.  So, Sammy, I love you and miss you, and hope you can feel my affection for you.

  2. It is so very hard with ferals. You cared about Sammy and you cared for him. He was one of the lucky ones.

  3. So sorry. When my cat Suzy got ill 20 years ago this month I knew I had to let her go. Her eyes told me she'd had enough.

    Hugs xx

  6. Maybe Sammy came to you partly because he knew he needed help and that you would love him enough to provide it. Doesn't make it any easier,I guess.

  7. Don't second guess yourself. You did the best you could...and Sammy knew that. He knew you loved him enough to keep him from hurting anymore.

  9. It never gets easier, does it? Doing "the best we could" doesn't offer much solace - as true as it is.

  13. I hate that feeling, looking back at times when we were less experienced, less knowledgeable. But I have no doubt all was done that could have been, and Sammy was undoubtedly grateful for an end to his suffering. He'll let you know in person, some day.

  14. i think it's very natural to question our decisions in hindsight--you have to trust that you and the vet did the right thing--its easy to forget all the info you were given at the time. I know how much you love and care for cats and there is no way you would have let him go if you could have kept him. It was time. He was lucky you came into his life!

  15. You did the best you could at the time, and Sammy taught you some things too. At least he had a kind ending instead of suffering for a long time. Sending purrs.
