July 30 is also Paperback Book Day.
My childhood was sprinkled with paperback books; most of them where leftovers from my family.
Here are a few that stand out:
Ray Bradbury's The Illustrated Man
My father loved sci-fi, so his paperback collection of sci-fi was a terrific source of reading material.
This book is a collection of short stories, and every one is imprinted on my brain.
Bertrand R. Brinley's The Mad Scientists' Club
I still have this totally beat-up book, which I believe first belonged to my brother.
Six junior genius members of the Mad Scientists' Club investigate a sea monster, the theft of a valuable dinosaur egg, a hot-air balloon race, search for stolen money from an old bank robbery, and more!
Charles M. Schultz's "What Next, Charlie Brown?"
Yep, we bought Charlie Brown comics in paperback, and we had many of them.
The TV programs came along after the books, and we loved them all.
Later, I collected my own paperbacks: Dark Shadows TV show, John Jakes' multiple series, and...don't laugh...Barbara Cartland romances.

I had forgotten about Barbara Cartland! I read her books when I was a teenager. Heavens that was decades ago.

DeleteHappy Friendship Day! Funny you mentioned Dark Shadows, who played Quinten Collins, used to watch out for the my wife when she was young. He worked at his parents office supply store and my wife's Dad had an office about their store.

DeleteI had a huge collection of collected Peanuts comics; I loved those. Encyclopedia Brown, Sherlock Holmes, science fiction... I prefer hardbound - and many of the books I read are from a hundred years ago or so, and therefore are mostly hardbound - but paperbacks have a smell and feel and history all their own.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, I've got hundreds of hardbound, but those paperbacks as I was growing up was where I did so much reading.
