Maneki Neko Day

Today, the 29th of September, Japan celebrates Maneki Neko (Beckoning Cat) Day.

Maneki Neko brings happiness, good luck, and wealth to homes, businesses, and their customers.

Why was the 29th of September chosen as Maneki Neko Day?

In Japanese, the number 9 is pronounced as KU and that sounds like this verb ‘kuru’ 来る meant COME.

Then, the number 2 is pronounced FU and as l mentioned before the number 9 is KU so we can make the word FUKU福with the number 29. That means GOOD LUCK.

The pronunciation of 9.29 can be written KURUFUKU来る福as ‘Good luck is coming’ and that is related to Maneki Neko.

We are thankful to have two Maneko Nekos at Eastside Cats.
The cutie on the red stand, with a Lucky Cat book tucked inside, was a gift from my neice.
The larger one was brought from Japan by my boss.

There is the Lucky Cat Museum in Cincinnati, Ohio, which I would love to visit someday.

There is a local Japanese restaurant here and they have several of those in their lobby. I wonder if the owners have kitties or if they know there is a special day for them? mmm...might need to go and have some sushi:)

  5. Nice Maneki Nekos! Mom used to have about 6 or 7, she even had one that waved its paw, but now all Mom has is a computer good luck god that looks like one of those little Buddas. Purrs Marv
