Last night, I learned that a neighbor has been feeding a juvenile raccoon for months.
She said there were two small raccoons without a parent in that tree, and now only one appears for meals.
Raccoons are a native species to Michigan, but are not endangered.
In general, any wildlife can be harmed by becoming acclimated to humans, which is NOT the goal of World Animal Day.
And yet, anyone reading this post is an animal lover, and will go to great lengths to help any critter.
The world is a huge place, so being kind to all of the creatures, great and small, can only be a good thing.
❤️❤️❤️
sometimes though we have to lend a helping hand.
ReplyDeletewe hope the other raccoon is alright 🍀💙🐟
Kindness, whether to animals or humans, should be the foundation stone of everything we do!
ReplyDeleteHappy World Animal Day!
ReplyDeleteIt is certainly a difficult choice to make, and yet ... there may be better ways other than allowing a wild animal to become acclimated to "human care", as often that does not really serve them well in the long term.
ReplyDeleteWe all need to care for all our precious animals. I agree with Ann though. Wild animals need special care that most of us can't give.
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous day and rest of the week. Scritches to the kitties. ♥
It is difficult not to intervene. At least she isn't feeding perfectly healthy geese or ducks junk food. A friend once freaked out when geese went after her young daughter after feeding them bread. ~shakes head~ I sometimes wonder if putting out sugar water for hummingbirds and insects is really helpful or harmful. I hope it's not benefitting only me. Best wishes, my dear!
ReplyDeleteYour neighbor is exceedingly kind
ReplyDeleteWe love most all critters big and small.
ReplyDeleteIt's very kind of the neighbor. She may want to call around and see if any wildlife rehab people can step in.
ReplyDeleteWhen raccoons reach sexual maturity, usually between 18 months and 2 years, they become wildly unpredictable and have been known to seriously maul even humans they have known since they were tiny. This is not just hearsay. You might want to talk to your neighbor about helping these animals in a way that will be beneficial to everyone.
That is so, so kind of your neighbor. It's important to help all animals, everywhere. XO
ReplyDeleteI've had a number of raccoons come to my home feral-cat feeding station. I think there is just the one now, but all are welcome. It's hard to say 'no'...
