April showers bring May Flowers!
Celebrate May Day by enjoying a few of the spring flowers in our yard:
Wood Poppy (Stylophorum diphyllum) |
Red-berried Elder (Sambucus racemosa) |
White Trillium (Trillium grandiflorum) |
Woodland Phlox (Phlox divaricata) |
Rue Anemone (Thalictrum thalictroides) |
Spring Beauty (Claytonia virginica L.) |
Downy Yellow Violet (Viola pubescens) |
These are plants that experts say were alive and well in Michigan before Europeans settled.
The native birds, bees, bugs, and bats all evolved with these plants, and they are acclimated to our environment.

The flowers are lovely. I have never seen yellow violets.
ReplyDeleteI've been seeing so many of the same plants here in Ohio. My only complaint is they go so fast! Ones I saw 2 weeks ago, like blood root are now in seed. I need it to slow done now that the weather is better. However we are way too hot for end of April and start of May.
ReplyDeleteSo very pretty, remember some wooded areas in northern Michigan where the forest floors were just blankets of trillium ...
ReplyDeleteV, your garden is AWESOME! did you plant the
ReplyDeleteyellow violet, or is it wild ? L
V, as usual, my comment doesn’t post unless I log out.. am trying to say, your garden is AWESOME, did you plant the yellow violet or is it wild ? L
ReplyDeleteI have some wood poppy, but they aren't blooming yet. I hope to get some trilliums too - but I haven't seen any around here in a long time!
ReplyDeleteThose are all very pretty and hooray for blooming season!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful flowers. We have lots of weeds. When hubby gets better he'll tackle them. I am not a yardwork person.
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous day and rest of the week. Scritches to the kitties. ♥
Beautiful blooms. Happy May Day!
ReplyDeleteThey are lovely
ReplyDeleteYour lovely photos make me want to walk the local arboretum's wildflower woodland path. :D Be well!
ReplyDeleteVery nice! And those early ones are so welcome. We have the same ones here, regular north American spring ephemerals. I had them in my yard until a few trees fell (not all mine) and took down the fences and everything moved in to eat the goodies. Now I'm reintroducing them in my woodland garden and sunny garden. We can compare plants in a few years!
ReplyDeleteOh, "Anonymous" above was me!
ReplyDeleteSo pretty. Happy May Day, dear friends!
ReplyDeleteHooray for the flowers, and those with the green thumb to grow them.
ReplyDeleteWe're at last receiving some rain here; it's chilly but it's wet, and we need it. By the way, wasn't Rue Anemone the street in Paris where all the flower-sellers worked?...
