Plethora

Friday, July 18 just before sunset, I spied cats efurrywhere!

The first cat is Niko, and the last cat is Sly.

The rest have no names, not even the bunny rabbit, but I'll discover them if I ever see the humans that are caring for them.

Purrsonally, I'd rather all cats stay inside, so I can take their pictures through windows.

Until that happens, my eyes are always peeled for my furry friends.

👀

Thanks for all of the well-wishes for Chili Bruce.

He appears to be fine, while The Hubby dislikes having to be the 'bad guy' who has to grab CB for his medication deliveries.

Da Boyz haven't snuggled at all, which has me a bit on edge.

Am sure things will iron out soon.

The Toofs Of CB

It's Twozday!

Yesterday, Chili Bruce had two teeth extracted, leaving only one on his left side.

I added red lines to show you all of the teefs that are now absent; seven in total.
Once CB came home, Manny jumped into his carrier!
I'm not trying to fool you; it's really Manny.
Taken on Sunday, pre-vet visit.

The vet had predicted four teeth would need to go, so only two extractions is good!

The vet tech called to tell me that after waking from surgery, CB ate the entire can of food that I'd left.

In a normal day, each Eastside Cat gets a full can; 1/2 in the AM, the other 1/2 in the PM.

We have a few meds to administer for three to four days, but are confident that CB will come out of this experience with no problems.

Manny, however...he's not liking the vet smell on his brofur nor on me, but at least there is no hissing or swatting.

🦷 🙀 🦷

P.S. I've lost my calendar, or parts of it.

Am trying to rebuild it; you know, all of those weird National Days of whatever, that I so love to post about!

Unfortunately, some birthdays and significant milestones are also misplaced, so I apologize in advance if I miss anything.

Please send me an email (Contact Eastside Cats form over on the right sidebar) if you think of something that maybe I've overlooked...thanks.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner

Eastside Cats is thankful for miraculously winning two prizes in a row!
We guessed Kizmet's toe beans, and were correct.
We threw our paw in the air for a red-white-and-blue shirt, and we won!
Cheeto at Cats Veterinary, Clinton Township Michigan

We received a HUGE boxful of stuff from The Cat On My Head; see the top pic.

Another package arrived from 15AndMeowing, and Manny was pressed into service; see 2nd pic.

The third pic is Cheeto, a resident cat at Cats Veterinary, where Chili Bruce and Manny were being treated in an unmannerly way (according to them) yesterday morning.

That why Manny was easy to dress, as all of his fight was gone.

Those bald patches on Manny's head, plus scabs or sores on his chinny-chin-chin made The Hubby nervous, and he decided it was time for an expert opinion.

CB went along too, just in case they share some skin issue.

While Da Boyz were having a blood draw, a pawdicure, and other indignities, Cheeto wandered into the room to help me destress by allowing me to love on his amble ginger torso.

We are additionally thankful that we have a great veterinary staff, as they found really nothing wrong with Manny (unless the chin area doesn't clear up in a reasonable timeframe) but CB lost a bit of weight and has some bad toofs.

Dental for CB is scheduled for July 21.

Could be that CB was overgrooming is brofur due to his ouchie mouth, thereby causing the bald patches.

Thank you, The Cat On My Head and 15AndMeowing, and Cheeto too.

Old Coat

It's Twozday!

There was a downturn in our temperatures.

My old winter coat became the purrfect place for Manny and Chili Bruce to nap upon.

Luckily, the sunshine was bright, which added an additional layer of warmth on their dark fur in the morning.

Da Boyz return to the veterinarian on Wednesday, as a check up on their dentals.

The Hubby and I have been diligent about their meds, despite my one time NOT squirting the liquid into a yap but rather all over fur and The Hubby's shirt.

They both appear to be recovering nicely, thank goodness.

2015 Dentals for Paddy & Sweetie

A re-post from 14 November, 2015: The Skinny, The Not-So Skinny, and The Missing

Where does the time go?

Here's what happened:

Back in March, when I trapped Paddy (who had an abscess) and Sweetie (because I went for a two-for-one approach), the vet said that Sweetie's teeth were 'bad'.  The vet was unable to examine her further, because she fought like the feral cat she is!  That word 'bad' has been rattling 'round my head all of these months, plus the fact that Sammy had a such a infected mouth that we helped him over the Rainbow Bridge to end his suffering.

So, I put a plan in place.  We set up the drop trap over the feeding station, and fed Sweetie and Patty there until Wednesday night.  That's when I dropped the trap around them both, and we put them in humane traps.

Paddy and Sweetie getting used to the drop trap
Keeping warm in the tent!
Overnight, I put the two trapped cats inside a tent, then covered them with sheets and blankets, to conserve their body heat.

Thursday morning, I drove to All About Animals in Warren, Michigan, so they each could receive a dental cleaning, and Sweetie got a microchip too; Paddy was microchipped when he was neutered in 2011.

I waited by the phone all day Thursday, as I had asked the staff to call me if they found anything in either cat that they felt would deserve a trip to a full veterinarian's office.  About 2:30 pm, the phone rang.  The news: Paddy came through the procedure just fine, but she wanted me to know that they consider him TOO FAT!  Sweetie, however, was a different story, and my heart jumped in my chest.  Sweetie came through everything just fine with no tooth extractions, because she's missing 19 teeth.  Let me say that again...NINETEEN teeth are missing!  They pretty much did root canal work on her, in six areas where the teeth were gone but the root still there.  My poor Sweetie!

Cats have 30 teeth; I looked it up on the internet.  She is missing most of her teeth!

Cat teeth are fragile, the veterinarian said.  They cannot chew on thick or dense material, like dogs chew on a rawhide, because their teeth will crack. Sweetie was living pretty rough until she joined our family, I guess!  Patty is missing seven teeth, which isn't a good record either.
Sweetie's dental notes
Paddy's dental notes

Thursday night was one of the loneliest of my life.  I had to restrain myself from looking out the windows, because although my brain knew Paddy and Sweetie were being held overnight at All About Animals, my habit of searching for them outside is deeply engrained!

Friday morning, I drove in the dark to pick up my feral friends.  While waiting for the staff to assist, I met Mush, the office cat:
Mush

Mush knew a cat-lover, and he was all over me to the delight of the other patient parents who waited with me.  Mush kept staring at a puppy, which made the dog paralyzed with fright!  After a very short time, Paddy and Sweetie were brought out for me to take away.

Now, you'd think I was a nervous wreck from all of this, and you'd be correct!  But not as nervous as I was when I let them out of their cages on the deck.  A fierce wind was blowing...a bit rainy...and the two of them had been trapped, manhandled, poked, prodded, and taken from familiar ground for days! Unsurprising though, Paddy stepped out of his trap and came over to head butt me.  My Paddy!  I almost cried with joy.  Sweetie was very skittish, and would not accept any pets.  I put the traps away in the barn, and put out a half-a-can of food for each.  Patty ate like nothing had happened, but Sweetie seemed a bit uncomfortable and she shied away after a few mouthfuls.  Understandable!

Later on, I put out some home-cooked turkey, made with love by The Hubby, and nutritional yeast sprinkled over the top, and voila!

The moral of the story:
Much less kibble for Paddy and Sweetie!  Only wet food from now on, at least until it gets too cold when wet food freezes.  Paddy needs to lose weight, and both of them should chew on soft foods.  In the back of my mind, I am thinking that Sweetie's coughing/sneezing fits could have been caused by her bad mouth, and the veterinarian agreed with me, although she really didn't know if the fits could be caused by other issues (lungworm, heartworm, etc.)  Will wait and see.

It's amazing that I've now trapped each of them multiple times using my 'drop trap as feeding station' bit, and yet they still love me!  Guess they can feel my love for them...?

P.S. All About Animals is a fantastic resource for the TNR (trap-neuter-return) community in Metro Detroit, plus they offer low-cost health exams, tests and vaccines for pet dogs and cats.  Without their resources, I would not be able to help my outside cat friends.  Please consider a donation to aid their cause.  Go here for more information: http://www.allaboutanimalsrescue.org/.  In gratitude, I've volunteered multiple times at TNR classes, feral cat building classes, donated items for auction, and even washed walls and floors when they moved to their current location!  I carry their cards in my purse and car, to hand out to anyone who has a pet.

P.S.S. My heart goes out to the people of France.  If we can learn to love our animal friends, we can surely learn to love our fellow humans.  Let us all work toward love and peace, for every single living thing on our planet.

Preliminary Results

Thank you all for your encouraging words for The PO'M!

He made his first trip to the veterinarian in a carrier, as all previous trips had been in a humane trap.

The blood tests will take a few days, but here's what we know so far:

PO'M is FIV negative.

He probably has a flea bite allergy, hence his licking and often hairball expulsion.

He's got wicked bad teeth.

WARNING: Turn volume down for video below, otherwise you'll drive your own cats crazy!

Singing the song of his people before the vet visit
Looking out of his room
Always the hair stylist!

Dental appointment is set in a few weeks, but we may move it forward, once the blood work gives us the green light.  The vet said at least three canines would go.

Paddy took the grabbing, carrier-stuffing, and being vet-handled poorly; can't say I blame him.

But, he's allowing me to pet him, smooch him, and rub his belly, so he'll be okay.

Angel Sammy

Six years ago, on June 12, 2014, I helped Sammy leave his earthly body to run freely into the light.

I hadn't expected it; we were at the veterinarian's for a dental appointment.

The vet said that Sammy was very sick, his mouth was very messed up, and no amount of dental work or antibiotics was going to pull him back 100% into the world of the living.

I cried, sobbed, and rained tears down upon Sammy's fur.

He looked at me, and said, "Let me go now".

You can hear Sammy's meow, which sorta sounded like 'Arf!' to me!

As I type this, I look at the heart-shaped urn that holds Sammy's cremains.

Even though he was an outside-only cat, and feral until he was feeling too unwell to want to run away, his presence and purrsonality made a huge impact on me.

Hope you are resting in peace, Angel Sammy, and that you know that I will always love you.

Sweet-nesday

X: extracted last week
O: missing
Adult cats have 30 teeth; Sweetie only has 4 now!
I'll do anything to get her to eat, even if I must serve her on my bed!
Cutie Sweetie!
It's over a week since Sweetie had her dental extractions.

While not altogether a smooth sail, we've managed to get her meds into her by various means...or she's had to lick some off of her fur; oops!

All medications cease by the weekend.

Sweetie enjoys being combed, and is so playful when the mood is on her!

At night, she crawls onto my torso, and we sleep quietly together.

Some of her newer nicknames:

Sweet-LESS-day!

Sweetie hanging out beside our driveway.
One of the first photos of her, from May, 2009.

Sweetie spend Monday and Tuesday nights at the veterinarian's.

Because they had to redraw her blood, and needed 24-48 hours to get results, we decided to board her until her dental extractions on Wednesday.

I MISS MY SWEETIE!!!

I have vacuumed her apartment, and fixed up the litter boxes.

All of her toys are arranged in front of her favorite bed.

I hope to pick her up today, but the vet will determine how well Sweetie's gums are after the surgery, to allow her to go home or remain overnight to be monitored.

I expect a phone call this afternoon, so I'll be pacing the floor all day today.

It's the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day!

My elementary school celebrated the 1st Earth Day.
The students made a garden on the school grounds.

My point of view:
Folks around the world are seeing critters venturing out into areas they aren't always seen, as human activity is low.

You've all seen photos of Los Angeles and other big cities, without smog.

There is a lesson in all of this; Mother Nature Rules!

She can send hurricanes, typhoons, earthquakes, poisonous algae blooms...and illness.

MN has been pounding us over the head, telling us humans that it's time to get our collective act together, and respect her and The Earth.

This isn't about governments.

It's how each of us value our own lives, and our loved ones.

My loved ones include humans, cats, birds, worms, bees, fish...even spiders (eek!)

Leave only footprints when walking in Mother Nature's gardens.

Happy Earth Day!

A Sammy Retrospective

Five years ago today, I helped Angel Sammy to The Rainbow Bridge.  It was a shock, since I'd trapped this friendly feral for a dental exam at the vet's office.  The vet said he was too sick, and his mouth was a mess.  Back then, I didn't have the gumption to push back at the vet, because I didn't know then that I could pill a feral, or that there were compounding meds to rub into an ear.

But, Sammy was ready to go.  He gave me a look, that said, "I'm tired.  Please let me go."  I cried, and cried, and sobbed, and so did the veterinarian.  Sammy was my first euthanization too, and I didn't have time to prepare...if there is such a thing.

Sammy had a wonderful meow, that was more like a bark..."ARF!", and I miss it.  Hard to believe this much time has elapsed.  His cremains are in a white urn, that sits on my dresser.  The top photo was the first one I'd taken of him ever, on April 17, 2010, so he was a part of The 'O' Cats for over four years.  As time went on, he became used to me, and I was able to pet him.  Hope you are resting in peace, Angel Sammy.  I love you.

What the Toof...?

Oh noes!

Angel had a broken toof!  The nice veterinarian made it all better for her, and she is acting perfectly fine this morning.  Yesterday, as I held her before she was whisked into the bowels of the vet's office, she managed to shed a ton of fur...on me!

Fur all over my front
Fur all over my arm
These photos do not convey the extent of furs stuck to my winter coat! Poor Angel, she was not a happy camper yesterday morning.  But...I am glad we got her teefs cleaned and serviced, since she'd lost some weight since her last visit.  Her bloods came back normal...yay!

Chucky did not take Angel's capture and removal from the house well, however.  I had explained to him what was going to happen, but he was very unhappy all day, says The Hubby.  He even had an accident outside the litter box, and when I got home from work, his tail was low and he needed lots of lovin' and smoochin'.  So, that's what I did to both kitties, and all seemed normal when I left this morning.

And I received a surprise!
Sweet!
A co-worker gifted me with lovey dovey cat socks!  See what happens when people find out I'm a crazy lady with cats?  Totally unexpected; I will wear them this Sunday on St. Valentine's Day. Thanks, CS!

Holistic Vet Visit

Her Pills
Cute Angel!
On January 28, Angel and I visited Sheppard Alternative Animal Care in Utica, Michigan.  Such a calm and peaceful office!  Angel, however, was not calm; she cried most of the way there, and the drool!  I had no idea what to expect, but was delighted by the professionalism and obvious care every staff person radiated.  In a nutshell, the doctor and assistant, by touching Angel's body with their hands and small, sealed glass vials of different liquids, determined her system's strengths and weaknesses. Their website here says, "We use a non-invasive system of analyzing your pet's body through Nutrition Response Testing℠."

Angel, they determined, has a few food sensitivities, one of them being moose!  All in all, Angel's health is good, scoring 10 of 10 or 9 of 10 on most things.  The doctor suggested that I crush up two selected vitamins for her, to aid her digestion especially.  See the photo above of her pills.  He said to start slowly, just a sprinkle on her food for awhile.  She did not hesitate at all with the sprinkles, so I quickly began to give her full doses within days.  Where we've lucked out, is that there is no need to change her canned food.

I see no difference, honestly.  Yet.  I will continue to give her the vitamins, and go back for her return visit on February 27.  Her dental appointment is this Wednesday.  Chuck goes for his heart echo-cardiogram on February 19, at which time I will discuss the holistic approach with the heart veterinarian.

February is Veterinary month in our house!

Believe me, this is harder for me than it is for you

Empty
Today, we did not feed Angel and Chuck breakfast.  I marched right past them both as they meowed their displeasure, with kibble and bowls in my hands...and went outside to feed the 'o' cats.  Then, I dug my car out of the snow, and went to work.  Hubby shoveled his way to his car, warmed it up, came back inside and stuffed both cats in their carriers...and went to the veterinarian's office.  Dental cleaning, plus blood draw, plus shots.

When I left the office in the afternoon, the storm was over, but the drifts were huge; see my ride at the top.  The vet's office was busy, so we waited for the doctor to tell me the results of the blood tests, which were normal.  However, the thyroid test is the only one done offsite, and won't be available until Friday.  Doc is concerned about Chuck's recent weight loss, .4 lbs since his check up less than a month ago.

Then, I loaded Angel and Chuck into the car, and they sang most of the way home, but they were exhausted from not eating, not being home, not having their humans to hang with, and what was all that cold, white stuff flying around in the air?  Now, of course, the cats had a hard day, but it took a heck of a lot out of the humans too!  Hubby had to shovel, then catch, then transport...and he really doesn't feel comfortable at any doctor's office, human or cat.  And he was home all day, with no wife, no cats...alone.  That was stressful, he says!  Meanwhile, I'm had to slog my way to the office at the beginning of the snowstorm, then worry about what was happening at home (including thinking about the 'o' cats in the blowing snow), then all the rest.  I paid the bill too!  I'm pretty worn out, and seeing both cats sleeping in the room farthest from the humans right now is a bit painful.

Their teeth had some tartar and a bit of gingivitis, but in good shape otherwise.  I'm going to soak in a hot bath for awhile, and hubby is watching a nice, relaxing basketball game on TV.  WHEW!
George
On a really good note, I received new photos of George, the stray/feral that P. and I trapped in 2008.  He's been living with a fantastic family that took him in and he's learned to hang out with humans and their myriad of animals.  We never knew if George was a dumped pet or a stray, but his family patiently worked with him until he's the vision of cat-love you see here.  He's polydactyl too, and as handsome as can be.
Yay George, and the T. family!  Smooches to you all!
