Polly Want A Flower?

Let's celebrate all things that make our pollinators happy!

In our yard, we have:
Thimbleweed, which I think are adorable.
Penstemon or Foxglove Beardtongue, with bee friend
Red Columbine, after flowering, look a bit outer space alien, no?
Spiderwort, with Red-Banded Leafhopper
Spiderwort is named from the super-sicky sap, which is what the Leafhopper is after.
Early Meadow Rue, not yet flowering; those wee leaves are cute!

Pollinators include:
Bees
Bats
Butterflies
Moths
Birds
Beetles
Ants
Flies
Wasps

  1. I am trying to incorporate more pollinator friendly plants in our yard, too...and attempting to root out all kinds of invasive meanies that love our back woodsy area...its a never ending battle, esp against the bittersweet, which isn't the native american ones. They made several trees come down over the years, until I found out why...same with Virginia Creeper...

You do have some interesting plants!

  2. Beautiful plants. I was very happy yesterday to see an actual honey bee on one of my orange butterfly plants. Sometimes I have good years when there's lots and sometimes it's only the bumble bees and other miscellaneous bees

  3. We have left big chunks of our garden, with lots and lots of clover, unmowed for the bees!

  4. Dearest Eastside Cats,
Since 1997 we have our estate certified as a Backyard Wildlife HABITAT attracting all sorts of wildlife. https://mariettesbacktobasics.blogspot.com/2011/04/our-backyard-wildlife-habitat.html
The Tradescantia or Spiderwort can be very invasive!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

  6. We have lots of things our pollinators love too. It's the right thing to do.

Have a fabulous day and week. Scritches to the kitties. ♥

  7. I had some of that pretty white penstamon, but it didn't come back (I think one of that cats actually ended it but...). I do have a hybrid purple one that's pretty spectacular, - but I love the white!

  8. I think I am seeing more dandelions left to flower than I have in the past. That's a good sign. Mowing can be done after the blooming season.

  9. I appreciate your educational post and great photos. :D My neighbors seemed intent on killing ground bees one year so I made a large sign proclaiming their benign behavior toward humans and incredible value. And just today I saw a bumper sticker proclaiming, "Give Bees a Chance", which made me giggle. Best wishes, my dear.

  12. All we have is clover. I wish I had a green thumb and could cultivate more things to attract pollenators. At least we don't spray weed killer.
