Wild Walk

Although walking in my neighborhood is good exercise, a work break, and a great time to listen to an audiobook, it's not without dangers!

A skunk, who was very nervous when I stopped to look for my boyfriend Old Guy.
I backed away quickly; didn't want that skunk running toward me!
Old Guy was non-nonplussed.
Scary!

The gang...er, um...gaggle of Canada Geese made me walk all of the way around them, so they wouldn't rough me up.
Frightening!

Frozen kitty sniffs at frozen pup.
Last weekend was an ice-carving festival in town.
Freezing!

Sly: "Halt!  Who goes there?"
Me: "Sly, it's me, the lady who walks by daily."
Sly: "You cannot pass, not without the password!"
Me: "Um...how 'bout I give you some scritches?"
Sly: "That'll do!"
Bribery!

Yep, it can be dangerous in my 'hood!

To The Rescue!

 I take walks in my neighborhood.

Daily, and sometimes twice a day.

About 30-35 minutes for the loop.

Yesterday, about 10 minutes into my walk, I stopped to visit with a neighbor cat friend.

Old Guy (image above) is living on her front porch, and there are others who use her garage and back stoop.

She and I chatted about everything cat under the sun, and more.

I finally set off again on my walk, and just as I was about six houses from home, The Hubby drove up in Cat Car II!

He'd set out to find me, since I'd been gone for over an hour.

Isn't that sweet?

Years ago, I tripped on uneven concrete, fell, and ended up with four fractures in my left hand, with a clunk on my head AND a scraped up knee.

The Hubby remembers that incident, and felt it prudent to look for me...just in case.

My fault for not answering my phone (had it on silent) when he called to check in.

Whoops!

Sorry, dear...and thank you for attempting to rescue me.

More 'Hood Cats

There are always cats to be found on my neighborhood walks!

During the Thanksgiving holiday, a visitor had this great decal on their car.

We have visitors to our yard!

The cats are seen daily, drinking from the little pool of water that comes out the discharge tube from our basement sump-pump.

In this photo, both are in the neighbor's yard.

I've placed a water bucket on our deck, hoping to convince them to drink clean water.

They run away when I appear, so I have my work cut out to habituate them to my presence.

Challenge: accepted!

Too Many 'Hood Cats

Images snapped while on my neighborhood walk:

A neighbor's grandkids drew chalk stars, butterflies, and cats on the sidewalk.

Guy was happy to see me, and I him.
He's a stray that a neighbor is caring for.

One-eyed ginger, who has a home and humans, I'm told.

A mama kitty, whose three kittens hid from me.

Sure, it's fun to visit with the 'hood cats, but there are too many strays.

Folks think that they are being kind by feeding outside cats, but getting them TNR'd is what MUST BE DONE!

I speak of it to anyone who is interested, and to some who think it's someone else's problem.

Our communities need to get a grip on the overflow of intact cats; there are plenty of low-cost clinics in our area, and the county animal control will even assist with transporting trapped cats to the clinic and back again.  

I certainly cannot TNR my entire neighborhood, nor can I force my way onto other people's properties...as much as I'd like to, to help cats.

I know I'm singing to the choir.

I am so very thankful for fosters, trappers, neonatal kitten feeders, and the veterinary folks who go above and beyond to help cats in need.

We cannot adopt our way out of this!

Old Guy

My neighbor loves critters, and this down-and-out cat showed up on her porch a few months ago.

Although he doesn't seem to like other cats, he's very friendly to humans!

I pet him, and pick him up, and he is quite the gentleman.

Obviously, he's not in great shape, and my neighbor and I are keeping a close eye on him.

Stray cats are not always good candidates for vet visits, because often euthanasia is what is recommended.

He's doing better than when he first arrived, though, and sleeping in the warm sunshine is Guy's favorite pastime.

So, since he's sleeping on her porch in daylight, and in her garage at night, this is her call.

I've offered to do what I can, and have donated a pile of canned cat food for her tribe of cats.

In the meantime, I've grown quite fond of Guy!

P.S. Don't tell The PO'M, Sly, or The Hubby that I have a new boyfriend...m'k???
