The world 'solstice' comes from the Latin 'solstitium', meaning 'Sun stands still', because the apparent movement of the Sun's path north or south stops before changing direction.
At the winter solstice, the apparent position of the Sun reaches its most southerly point against the background stars.
Winter begins at:
Wed, Jun 21, 2023, 8:57 AM Easter Island Time
Thursday, December 21, 2023, at 10:27 PM Eastern Standard Time
Fri, Dec 22, 2023, 4:27 AM Central European Time
Thu, Jun 22, 2023, 12:57 AM Eastern Australian Time
Here's a thought...now that it's officially Winter, that means Spring is NEXT!
WOOT!
Something to be thankful for on the longest night of the year, after the shortest day.
