Today is the birthday of Post Impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh: 3/30/1853-7/29/1890

"Van Gogh's Ear: The True Story" by Bernadette Murphy, published in 2016.

An easy read, full of interesting details about what happened on the night of 12/23/1888.

There is also a Public Broadcasting System episode from the Secrets of the Dead series that follows Bernadette's research, and how she and her team uncovered the missing piece of evidence that had solved the mystery of Van Gogh's ear: the actual notebook of the doctor who treated Vincent, with a drawing of the injury.

Just a little cut on the earlobe, or something much more?

Henry Update:

The panic...yes, I was panicky!...has lessened, since he's being friendly and allowing pets, he sleeps in the bed at night, and so far is making the correct deposits in the litter box.

Saturday evening, he excitedly started on a churu, but backed away from it after about 1/3 of it was gone.

He allowed combing and snuggles afterward.

Sunday afternoon, he snacked from his food bowl, eating about a tablespoonful of wet food.

Thanks for the wishes that he's better; it's making a difference.

Construction began in 1956, finishing in 1959.

Postcards from NYC: MoMA

 The Museum of Modern Art has so many iconic pieces of artwork, that my jaw hung open at every gallery.

I minored in Art History in college, and I saw these pieces as static slides projected against the classroom wall.

To stand in front of them, in real life, breathing the same air as they did...well, it was exciting and humbling.

Each of these were produced at pivotal times in the lives of the artist, and for the art world.

Vincent van Gogh's Birthday

Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who posthumously became one of the most famous and influential figures in Western art history. 

In a decade, he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life.

Born: March 30, 1853, Zundert, Netherlands

Died: July 29, 1890, Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Periods: Post-Impressionism, Pointillism, Neo-Impressionism

And the subject of some comedy...

Iconic Vincent van Gogh

Today, I visit the Van Gogh in America exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts for the third and final time.

When and where else will I ever get a chance to see so much of his artwork in one place?

Sure, traveling to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands is on my to-do list, yet it'll be years yet.

Therefore, I've collected a few silly Van gogh images from social media for the entertainment of my readers:

For Caturday, I'm not using my own artwork, but a sketch of Vincent van Gogh's "Daubigny's Garden", that the artist included in a letter to his brother, Theo.

Van Gogh in America, exhibiting until January 22, 2023 at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who posthumously became one of the most famous and influential figures in Western art history. 

The son of a minister, van Gogh suffered his entire life with mental health issues.

He began work at age 16, when his uncle got him a job as a trainee with an art dealership in The Hague.  

Vincent also was employed at the firm’s London and Paris offices before he was fired in 1876. 

Afterward, he was briefly a schoolteacher in England, then worked at a bookstore back in the Netherlands. 

In 1878, he went to the Borinage, a mining district in Belgium, and worked among the poor as a lay preacher; he gave away his belongings and slept on floors, but after less than a year on the job the religious organization sponsoring van Gogh decided he wasn’t cut out to be a pastor and dismissed him. 

His next career choice, artist, would of course make him internationally famous, although not until after his death.

  

In a decade, he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life.
