The Devil You Know

Where I grew up in the suburbs of Metro Detroit, Michigan, the night before Halloween was named Devil's Night, and sometimes toilet paper was tossed into trees, words written in soap were scrawled on windows, and maybe an egg or two were tossed.

For us, Devil's Night was mostly harmless, being a way for kids to burn off a bit of energy.

However, some locations were seriously vandalized or ignited, and that just cannot be tolerated.

Nowadays, this practise is seriously frowned upon, and may even be illegal, and many local communities have volunteer patrols to keep properties from such damage.

A few devil jokes today, for your entertainment:

As A Reader

Know what scares me this time of year?

NOT HAVING BOOK TO READ!!!

Hahahaha...as if that will ever happen, as there are over 700 books on my To Be Read (TBR) list, plus the stacks of books on my night table, on my desk, in the cubby under the stairs, and oh yes...on the book shelves.
I love to read!

Bat Butts

Bat Week is an international celebration of the role of bats in nature.

24/10 to 31/10

Terry Runyan

I think bats are adorable!

Humans need bats.

Fun Bat Facts:
-Bats come in all shapes and sizes, from the tiny, adorable bumblebee bat that weighs less than a penny to the big, beautiful flying foxes that can have a wingspan of up to six feet.

-Bats are the only mammal that can truly fly (although some other mammals “glide”). A bat’s wing is actually a modified hand—similar to yours.

-Contrary to popular belief, bats actually have good eyesight (similar to that of humans), but for most species, their main technique for navigating or locating prey is using echolocation (not all species echolocate): emitting very high- pitched sounds that bounce off obstacles in their path, like trees, other bats, buildings, and food. main target—delicious insects. Not all bats that echolocate are insectivores!

-Bats eat lots of different things. Although almost 70% of bat species feed primarily on insects, some bats are carnivorous, eating meat like rodents, frogs, and fish. Only three species of bats feed on animal blood, with two of these species specializing on bird blood. Many other bats eat pollen, nectar or fruit—these bats are vital for pollinating flowers and spreading seeds that grow new plants and trees.

Alone

It's PO'Monday!

Late October, 2013.

Celestial Pommy seemed comfortable with Autumn.

His fur colors blended well with the landscape.
While on a recent nature walk, as Mother Nature whispered into my ear with a light wind, and her palette of leaf colors dazzled my eyes, it occurred to me that I once spent hours each and every day with Paddy, out in the yard.

I'd sit on the back deck, or wander about, and he would trail me wherever I went.

Warm, cold, sunny, rainy; we were a team.

The yard is so lovely now, with yellows, reds, greens, rusts, and oranges.

But it's lonely.

New Friends

Some new 'hood cats!
This wee kitten is SO friendly!
Followed me down the street too.
A neighbor told me who owns this kitty, so I'll have to visit them to discover her/his name.
Garfield is over nine years old, but is the size of a kitten.
Talked to his cat dad, who said Garfield just won't stay inside, so the window is left open.
Was delighted to see this sweetheart, who didn't run away but wouldn't get any closer.
Am fairly certain this is an owned cat, but more research is needed.

Taijitu

The yin and yang symbol (or taijitu) shows a balance between two opposites with a portion of the opposite element in each section.

In Taoist metaphysics, distinctions between good and bad, along with other dichotomous moral judgments, are perceptual, not real; so, the duality of yin and yang is an indivisible whole.
